01 / The story

Saved from the wrecking ball by the people next door

The Old North Sacramento School opened in 1915 and served the community for generations. Classes ended in 1996, and the school district used the building as offices until 2008. It has stood empty since.

When a prospective buyer sought to tear the building down, neighbors organized to save it. The school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021, and in 2024 it became a Sacramento city landmark, the first in North Sacramento.

In August 2025 it was acquired through a partnership between Creative Development Partners and the Old North Sacramento Community Association.

Renew North Sacramento is bringing the building back to life as a community cultural center, with housing planned for the adjacent site. The project combines development experience with deep neighborhood roots, so the community has a voice in shaping what this space becomes.
